Fox shoots man
Thu Jan 13, 2011 2:50pm EST

(Reuters) - A wounded fox shot its would be killer in Belarus by pulling the trigger on the hunter's gun as the pair scuffled after the man tried to finish the animal off with the butt of the rifle, media said Thursday.

The unnamed hunter, who had approached the fox after wounding it from a distance, was in hospital with a leg wound, while the fox made its escape, media said, citing prosecutors from the Grodno region.

"The animal fiercely resisted and in the struggle accidentally pulled the trigger with its paw," one prosecutor was quoted as saying.

Fox-hunting is popular in the picturesque farming region of northwestern Belarus which borders Poland.

Who the hell finishes off an animal with the butt of a rifle? Was he hunting in the trenches?

Thinking the same myself. Wouldn't be a good idea to hit the butt of a rifle against something if there is a round in the chamber. Now I'm sure someone will attack my comment with their 0.02 cents. abut some study about how that would never happen.

My family has had more than one gun given to us because some idiot thought he would finish off a wounded animal (that he wounded in the first place) with the butt of his gun.

Very stupid thing to do.

bet it was no accident...ask the fox:D

While not a good idea we should remember other hunters may not have the luxury of affording ammo like most of us can! It is easy for me to see this being the case knowing where the story comes from. Face to face, i may suggest he carry and axe, hammer or hatchet from now on though.

I'm still betting the ammo looks pretty cheap compared to the alternative now. He didn't even save a bullet in the long run.

I'd agree with your other suggestions if the ammo is that big of a deal.
