I got a 2nd hand barrel for my 870 and cut it off to 19-inches for a security shotgun during a moose hunt a couple years ago. I tried to pot a few grouse and hares but couldn't hit anything it was shooting so low.

This week on an outing I brought some pattern paper and a paper clip and fashioned a rough and ready front sight for the barrel and clipped it off fairly high ready to cut to fit and lo and behold, my patterns were centred at 25 and 30 yards.! I tried some #8 target loads, some vintage Imperial paper hulled #6 loads and some old blue plastic Imperial # 5 .

Now the question is can a gunsmith put a bead on as high as my paper clip? I have it taped in place now but that won't stand being put in and out of a case or bashed around inthe truck.

It does not make sense that is was shooting low with no front sight... and now is shooting "on" with a quite high front sight. It should be the opposite.

A gunsmith should be able to make front bead on a small base to get the height. I recommend you shoot it again to make sure of the height before having the front sight custom manufactured.

Thank you. I'll have to check my diary from the trip. I may be remembering things backwards. I didn't really have a good place or paper to adequately test it with the bare barrel at the time.
