Like everybody i know it's possible to age a bear by the wear of his teeth's but a couple year's ago i've read that you could also age a bear by the lenght of the bone in his pecker but can't find that article. If someone could give me a link to finnally settle an argument with a friend (in my favor or not) it would be nice. Thank's in advence.

Hey MadDog, just remember to ice your pecker real well, we need MAXimum shirinkage so that we guess "young". Also, don't forget to shave so that the "illusion" is complete... Damn, where is WESTICLE???

The bone is called a baculum or the os #####. I can't see bones being cross sectioned for age because I think they are continuously eroded on the inside and added to on the outside. While it is possible that the baculum increases in diameter with age, I would think there would be quite a range in diameter with relation to age. I would expect the diameter to be closest to the bear's weight in the spring rather than to its age.

Thank's mooncoon , i saw the name of the bone on the web site www.bearsmart.com but i did'nt see any reference to the age. My biggest bear was age by his teeth's and was estimate at around 15 year's old and i can tell you the bone is much thicker and longer than a 4 or 5 year old bear.
