Bear and trichinosis and my dogs

Hey guys,

First time hunting black bear and shot a big old brute this spring. I had it butchered up into cuts (in hindsight will not do that again) and sausages (pepperoni very good). Anyways the cuts are really gamey so i have been soaking them in milk for a week and it helps a lot. I would then give the bloody milk to my dogs which they love (waste not). But now I am thinking this might not be a good idea.

Does anyone do this?

Have I infected my dogs with trichinosis?

Or am I just overreacting?

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

Bear gamey??? Where did you shoot this bear? How big was it. IMO black bear is the least gamey meat. Only one my wife will eat.
 
The cuts have a very distinct smell that I smelt when I was field dressing him plus it tastes like it smells. Near kamloops b.c.. he was probably around 450 lb.
 
Since you do not know if the bear was infected you cannot know if you infected your dogs. Not much you can do at this point except stop feeding the milk to your dogs or simply boil the milk before feeding it. Trichinella can be killed by heating the milk to 60C for 10 minutes and shorter if you boil it. Freezing is NOT a reliable way to kill Trichinella in bear meat as the same proteins that help the cells survive hibernation help to protect the parasite. As a side note: dogs are lactose intolerant so feeding them milk in larger quantities can lead to runny stools.
 
Trichinosis are found in cysts in the meat so it is unlikely that they will get into the milk as they have to be eaten along with the meat to get it. Cooking and deep freezing kills them off. That is why pork is sold as previously frozen even thou nobody has seen it in pork for many years.

Trichinosis cant be killed by freezing. cook it well and it cures all. dont let spread that freezing stuff that is very serious ...
