Bear baiting setups

I don't associate the word hunt with the word bait.
Sitting beside a rotting pile of donuts that have been drawing animals in for a month isn't hunting to you? What, you need to actually go out and find sign and persue an animal for it to be hunting? Hey, it's hard work dragging stinky food into the bush a couple times a season. Funny, some on here have staged guys for grind sluicing grouse yet advocate this. While ethical, it's hard to consider it fair chase. Oversized overpopulated rodents anyway. Like fishing with a fly vs a worm, one does all the work while you wait , the other relies on user skill.

Ever done it?..... all of those things you mentioned come in to play........ you may be surprised that there are areas in this massive country where you I can't see for 300 meters and spot and stalk a berry patch on a sunny hill.......

Baiting bear and deer takes work..... lots of it, if you want to be successful.......

The naysayers remind me of the antis that think a bait station is like the field of dreams.... (if you build it they will come).....

Settling up bait doesnt draw in deer and bear like you or anyone else thinks it does.......... until you try it, you should reserve your opinions.....

Thanks guy keep posting pics and description
Is a good way to learn from experimented hunter

Paul_T Just for perspective, I have found that bear hunting is very different in different parts of Canada. I have seen 27 bears in one 24 hour period near my cabin in north central B.C. In contrast, in Saskatchewan I hunted bears in good bear habitat for 8 seasons in a row without ever seeing one or ever coming close to having a shot. Bear hunting varies widely with conditions and habitats, and while in Saskatchewan I do use bait sometimes. I have killed TWO bears without bait in more than twenty years of hunting them in Saskatchewan, and THREE with bait. In most of BC I'd expect to kill a black bear pretty much every time every year with minimal effort with spot and stalk methods. Keep your judgements for your local area, they do not apply elsewhere.

Ya. It's funny how it goes. I bait bears so I can shoot one with my bow. I have had no luck getting one with my bow. I really have no interest shooting a bear with a rifle. That being said there are so many bears it's really not hard to shoot one with a gun. I have shot two bears the in the last two years and passed up a bunch more and none of them were over a bait pile. The reason I shoot them is because they have become a nuisance. I would consider getting one with my bow over a bait pile a far greater accomplishment than either one I shot with my rifle.

To answer the OP. I use a barrel with six 1" holes drilled in it. The bears were emptying it too quickly by rolling it around so I wired a 8 foot long pole to it so it can't be rolled. I fill it once a week with oats popcorn and molasses.

keep posting guys, i will be hunting bear for the first time next year and enjoy checking out all the different setups. its nice to be able to draw on the info from hunters experienced in a form of hunting i haven't done yet, its the best way to learn.

Just ignore the guys who hunt in a different part of the world and think their way is the only way, when in fact they have no clue what they are talking about. Pretty sad how hunters can be our own worst enemy if we don't do things the way they do.
Just because you know how to hunt in your own backyard area, doesn't mean anything in a different part of the country. But its just great that rather than read and learn you feel the need to prove your ignorance and insult everyone in a thread with your uneducated 2 cents.

I baited this spring and had a medium sized bear come out daily, sometimes twice a day. I swear he was watching down the road because the pics would show I only missed him by minutes. Oh well.... He will be bigger next spring.

A couple of pics of him hamming it up in front of the camera. The barrel is light with only a few pounds of feed inside and the complete top removed, so I have no idea how he got up there without tipping the barrel over. My hunting buddies tell me he was a circus bear, lol

I think he was behind the barrel peeking in but who knows, maybe he was in the barrel. (reminds me of a Navy joke...)
