Just finished watching 'Brunswick Bruins' on Canada In The Rough and was wondering about the issue of baiting. Which provinces allow it and which don't? Thinking of the Bear populations we have in B.C., especially on the west coast and Vancouver Island, I wonder what the rationale is behind not allowing it here.

We don't need to bait bears here. The terrain makes spot and stock feasible.

If baiting ever was allowed in BC, I'd hope it would only be on isolated private land.

hey i just watched that too, i know the slipp bros, good fellers, im only an hour from there, where i work on the base the do alot of there hunting, got me a real nice blackie spring before last, one of the top NB nears so im told, 565 lbs weighed on DNR scales, alot of big bears here in NB, but the real blackie bruts are in Newfoundland, we have established our on sub speices of bears there, over the years they have grown much larger and are turning there diet towards cariboo and moose calves, putting a real dent in the boo, but so are the coyotes as well.here is a pic or my bear, but thats my buddie in the pic.

Alberta allows baiting in certain zones. I'm not sure on why some zones it's allowed and some it isn't.

I used to think that it was not allowed in zones tht could also have Grizzly bears, but a quick look shows that it isn't allowed in the 100 and 200 zones, which don't have Grizzly's in them at all (Prairie zones) it is hit and miss on the 300 and 500 zones though, (Foothills and Boreal). Also not allowed in the 400 zones (Mountain).

Allowed in the WMUs i hunt in Alberta (mostly 358, 359, and 522). Restrictions abound though. (IE: Not within 1.6 kM of an occupied dwelling). Talk to the CO, before you build one. Big fines for having one an unacceptable location.

Predator Calls, that make the sound of a dieing rabbit. Have scared off bears, and called them back, its not for the light at heart, they come in trying to scare away whats holding their dinner. They huff and puff :D , and tear at small trees, they put on quite a show. I like the OLT calls , their tough, and work.

Thanks Levi. A call I picked up on my last visit to Alberta is made by Woods Wise called Raspy Cottontail that supposedly works well on Coyotes there.:) A friend tells me that a Deer call imitating a fawn bleet works really well for him, especially on spring Bear hunts.:) Two that he made particular mention of are the Primos Hands-Free Buck & Doe and "Deer Talk" the "Deer Stopper", one made by E.L.K. Inc. I live on Vancouver Island and would like to make 'it' a combo effort, Bears & Wolves. Anyway, thanks again for the info.:D

BC does not allow Baiting.
No need really as pointed out already.
We also have very strict Laws regarding the feeding of "Dangerous" wildlife.

Nothing wrong with Baiting or those that Practise it......whatever works and you feel Happy doing.

I however wouldn't Bait Bears even if allowed to do so.
I Much enjoy the Spot and stock appoach:cool:

Baiitng used ot be allowed in BC, don't know why it wa stopped but probably some guys wiht "more" ethics than others got it stopped.

I odn't see what the big deal is, although I wouldn't do it, mostly becuase it seems like a ####load more work than spot and stalk:runaway:
