So I fired off a bear banger from a batch I've shot a bunch of before without issue, and the thing blew in my chamber (benneli super nova 14") the shell is a bit ####ed up at the crimp but otherwise no crazy looking damage.

Barrel exterior looks fine, interior carbon'd up but I have not cleaned it yet so I don't know how it looks inside.

What is the charge in these(no the propellant but the "bang" part)? Could it have caused any damage to the barrel?

I kinda doubt you would have hurt the barrel as there is a completely open exit hole on one end, as well the barrels are usually proof tested to at least a double load. With that in mind, the Supernova's are chambered for 3.5" shells so again tons of meat in the chamber section.

I would maybe contact Stoeger Canada if you're really worried, and explain what happened. BUT, bear bangers are just a glorified fire cracker so I doubt any harm at all came to the barrel.

I don't trust the plastic cases on any flares, bangers or red/green/white.

When I teach people to fire those pen launchers I tell them to raise the launcher/flare over their head/eye level and to turn away when they fire in case it ruptures on ignition.

It also makes sense not to fire crack flares or other hazing rounds from your primary gun if possible as a flare malfunction could be bad news.

Bear bangers are typically a charge of flash powder - an inorganic perchlorate and aluminum powder. Charge weights are typically under 500mg, and may have a maximum as low as 130mg depending on the authorization spec approved by ERD. For comparison a firecracker has a maximum charge weight of 50mg.

Nine is correct in that the propellant charge of a shotshell will exert more pressure than the banger charge, but flash powder produces primarily solid combustion byproducts (including hygroscopic ones which will promote rust) so clean your barrel thoroughly.

We shoot a fair number of these every year,I have had quite a few go off in the brl. with no ill effect on the gun.We cut single shot shotguns down to use them in. They are very corrosive, witch is why we have dedicated guns for them. Also wads can and do get stuck in the brl. so beware.
