Barnes makes a 450 grain flat nosed solid, and I was thinking this would be excellent for Grizzly bear protection in my Marlin GG.

My question is whether this bullet may be too long for the calibre?

If not, does anyone know of a load for such a large bullet?

Not for the calibre, but possibly for the rifle. I have data for a 482 and 552 grain cast bullet. Barnes sells their own load manual.

Unless this is a new bullet, the 450 gr solid listed in the Barnes loading manual has a cannular about half way along it's length which would make the bullet too long to cycle through a Marlin. In the Barnes loading data it is only listed for the .458.

Another problem might be if you get checked by a CO and have your rifle loaded with solids. You could use the argument that you were not hunting, but I'd avoid the whole issue and stick with soft points.

You can go for either high quality premium jacketed bullets or heavy hardcast. For the biggest game I'd have to go with hardcast. As far as Cast goes I would recomend a heavy hardcast bullet from the likes of "Cast performance" or Jae Bok "Crater" bullets. Cast performance make a 405gr,420gr and 460gr hard cast bullet meant for Marlin Actions. They also have large meplat of .360 Go to the site and see what they have.
Jae Bok makes his own "Crater" line of bullets in 420gr and a monster 550gr hardcasts. like the Cast performance the "craters" will cycle through the Marlin. They have meplats of .365 You can look up his site too. type in Crater bullets or Jae Bok and you'll eventually get there.

ps. Go to Randy Garrett's site to see what has been done with the 45/70 and Slow Hardcast bullets. African Big 6!!!

Hope this helps

Cheers
