Of all the bear defence threads, I have seen very very very few posts from people who have actually killed a bear in said situation. I know of only 3 people who ever have. All three were different. One a 300 win mag, one a shotgun, and one a knife.

I carry 45/70 or 450 for such, but have not needed it yet. The debate is pretty much moot. With there being very little actual data to go on, other than using hunter data (which is a different scenario altogether), you're best to use what you like and know the probability is remote, unless you play in an extremely high encounter area.
 
there's an interesting Remington 870 Shorty that Dlask's is carrying now...comment on it is that packers and hunters requested it to be brought in for bear defense. so in that mind, the Norinco Shorty and the Grizzly Shorty would also fill that roll in a pinch! :D
 
As I've said before, any weapon can jam or missfire or the operator might panick but a partner who is slower than you with a backpack full of Salmon ......
