Has anyone used rendered bear lard for mixing up black powder bullet lube? I know that just about anything that will melt and mix with beeswax will sort of work for something, but it's fun to even say "bar grease. " It's like going full hill-billy.

Some years ago I tried using an organic (canola) oil as a cutting/tapping fluid in basement metal-work.

I found that after a few weeks of contact with metal it polymerized, turning first into a sticky jell, and then into a tacky wax which cemented together the metal shavings in the pan and was a real PITA to clean out.

Researching it I came to the conclusion that the presence of metal speeds up the natural polymerizing process of an oil by one or two orders of magnitude, so that an oil which should have been stable for years jelled in weeks. Think of raw linseed oil vs boiled (chromated) linseed oil.

I changed to using 40W motor oil (which is formulated to not jell for decades even in the presence of metal) and that has served me reasonably well since while having a friendlier MSDS and being readily available.

That jelling function may or may not be a problem for you, but it's something I though I'd mention.
