I have been lucky enough to be invited to a camp this year to hunt black bear.

Typically hunt with a Rem 700 6.8 SPC which has bee great out to 300 yards on deer. Not sure if it will have enough energy for a bigger black bear tho.

Does anyone here use a 12 Guage Sabot with success or even a 1 oz slug from a smooth bore.
I think my max shooting distance will be approx 80-100 yards.

Thanks,

If it'll kill Bambi at 300, it'll kill Yogi at 100 with no fuss. No armour on him. Where the camp is might matter though.
A 120 grain SPC has just a tiny bit less energy(923 ft/lbs.) at 300 than a 1 oz. slug does at 100(965 ft/lbs.). Figures for Hornady ammo.
Sabots need a rifled barrel though.

The camp is about 45 north of Northbay.

I am hoping the 6.8 will work..use the 130 Sierra Game King..

I do have the rifled barrel for the shotgun, just want to make sure I get a clean kill, so looking for best option.

If you are hunting from a stand over bait it would be pretty hard to find something that will hit as hard as a 12g slug .If you have a rifled barrel and can shoot a good group with it at say 50 yards or how ever far your bait is from the stand the 12g slug would be my choice for sure ,,Dutch

I have been hesitant at time times to reach for one of my 12's for a purpose like this, simply because I have no optics mounted and am less accurate with it than I am with my usual choice: .308. If you feel good about where you can place a shot and keep the distance reasonable, you should be fine.

A 12g sabot through a rifled barrel, perfect for that distance, feed it with a Lightfield Slug 546gr or 600gr , ready to go. Most important, whatever weapon of choice, be comfortable & accurate with it, know your gun & shooting abilities.

Your 6.8 spc should be fine ,just remember shot placement is key and black bears are not hard to put down .well placed shots with good bullet design r key in all hunting situations.you dont want a bullet fragment on a shoulder and want penetration to the vitals to do its job.i shoot remington ultra slugs and winchester suprems and have no hesitation on bears out to a 100 yards.i also know my slug gun well and practice with it along side my rifles at the range. Remeber sabots need rifled barels, if you shoot smooth bores,i would recomend brenekes and challengers rather than fosters that tend to be soft, dont know much about lightfields.

You guys keep coming on here asking " Is ###X enough gun for ###X?"

Regardless of what you replace ###X with, the CORRECT answer will always be the same: NO! IT'S NOT!

You guys are missing the bigger picture here. This is your golden opportunity to make less room in the gun safe! "I'm sorry hon, I know the kids were really hoping to get a post-secondary education, but it just wouldn't be ethical for me to hunt ###X with ###X. I need to crack into the RESP. It's for the good of Mother Nature. They'll understand. And hey! We'll get the family discount at McDonald's now!"

You ABSOLUTELY need to go buy a new rifle. TODAY! Mother Nature will thank you.
