A hunter has been mauled by an enormous black bear after shooting it with a bow and arrow in Minnesota.

The man, who has not been named, was hunting in dense woodland near Duxbury with a group of friends on Friday night when he fired at the 525lb animal
Fearing the bear's meat would spoil in the evening heat, the group then waited four hours before using its blood trail to track it several miles in the darkness.

Killed: The man, was hunting in dense woodland near Duxbury with a group of friends on Friday night when he fired at the 525lb animal. Above, the bear is seen in chains after it was stabbed to death during the attack

But after they found the bear lying injured on the ground in the early hours of Saturday morning, it suddenly charged and pounced on the victim.
The man started screaming as the bear clawed and bit him, before fatally stabbing the animal around 20 times with a hunting knife, according to Kare11.com.

Fellow hunter Craig Lindstrom, from Wyoming, said: 'I heard him screaming - felt like 10 minutes, but was probably two minutes - literally screaming, and you knew he was being mauled.
'He made that thing die because he stabbed it about 20 times while it was chewing on his arm. He kept stabbing it and it was pounding on him, a quarter of a ton - a 525 pound bear pounding on him.'

Fortunate fellow... and determined... I have taken a few bears over 500 pounds and it is hard to imagine a successful fending off of their mass and ferocity...
 
There is at least one other case of a black bear killed with a knife. It happened about 25 years ago on McDougal creek, in Nipawin provincial park , Saskatchewan.
The bear had killed and partially eaten a man fishing on the creek. It tried to make another fisherman a meal a few days later. When the attack occurred, the fellow managed to wade into deep water, the bear followed, and he stabbed it in the heart with a fillet knife. It broke off the attack, ran into the bush and died. The remains of the unfortunate victim were found later. It was written up in Outdoor life magazine. What made it more personal for me, was that my brother-in-law and I were fishing the creek the same weekend that the attack occurred! Don't ever underestimate a black bear.

I remember reading that account.
 
I saw another account by a fellow on Minnesota Outdoors or some other show like that.
This fellow had shot the bear and been attacked and was in bad shape.
The bear retreated but came back and fellow eventually rammed his arm down the bear's throat with his knife.
 
I've shot a 400 pound bear that is much bigger than the one in the picture. That one looks skinny and malnourished.
 
I read an article many many moons ago in a Sports Afield I think about back in the day where they had competitions of man with knife vs bear. There were a few legends born around those stories.
I think I still might have that mag but it is up at camp and I'm not going there anytime soon, but when I do I will check it out. It was a great read.

I think it can be taken both ways. If I go into bear country that forbids carrying a gun (e.g. provincial, national parks) I carry at least a big knife. Always fight back. You want to make sure that at least the bear has to kill you before it can settle down to eating you.

Didn't a bow hunter or a hunter scouting in Alberta use a knife to kill a grizzly that attacked him, sometime in the past few years?

I seem to recall a case in Ontario of a black bear mauling a guy's wife and him stabbing it repeatedly in an attempt to get it to stop the attack. Tragically his wife died and so did the bear albeit some distance away. He was a dentist if I recall which would have given him some insight into anatomy.

It's interesting when we talk of shot placement when unleashing "x" thousands of foot-pounds of energy and yet someone like the guy in this story has the wherewithal to off the bear with a lousy knife.

I knew both men very well, they were flyfishing unaware of the bear and/or his kill.
The two were really close friends, one a Saskatoon City Policeman and the other fellow a Corman Park Municipal police officer.
They were both caught mid-stream and wearing fly-fishing type waders could not move fast enough to get out of the way of the bear.
The Municipal officer incurred enough stab wounds in the bear for it to break off the fight and die nearby.
The bear's carcass was opened up and examined because of a fear of possible rabies or other diseases and when the stomach was opened up it was then a piece of cloth was discovered that didn't match anything the fishermen were wearing and after a short search the other body was discovered.
I have lost touch of the two fishermen since moving to BC, but they both had some pretty heavy duty scars...
 
We call it "Survival Mentality". That guy has enough to bottle and sell. A damned good thing too. And damned good that he had buddies nearby. Maybe I should rethink my preference for hunting alone.

Yeah, I do 95% of my hunting by myself...just seem to have a higher success rate hunting solo.
