Does anyone know what to do with a 35 to 40 year old bear rug that is crumbling?

A friend has a floor mount shot by her father quite a few years ago and the hide under the backing is breaking off in little quarter-size pieces.

I had the same thing start to happen to my flat hide from 1976 as early as 1990 that had been prepared at BC Fur dressers and Dyers in 1976. It just went brittle.

Do they all do that or were the chemical used at the time too harsh or what?

I'm not worried about mine, it's just got smaller and smaller over the years and it's no big deal, but the mounted one with head and all is a valuable family momento to them.

Can someone glue a fabric to the hide side to keep it intact for example?
