A farmer who gives us permission for goose and turkey asked us to try to shoot bears and coyotes on his property that are causing damage to his crops and taking his sheep. This is my first time baiting bear and this guy came by the camera. I'm just wondering if anyone with some experience sizing bear and could give me a rough guess on how big this guy is? Thanks

Judging size without a reference point is tricky.

It can be a good idea to measure an object in your camera's field of vision when you set it up so you can have a reference point for the game in any picture it takes.

Sometimes a shrub or small tree works. In a shot out in the open or intended for night etc a measured branch placed along the ground can work as well.

If you are being cautious about the set up due to scent always take same precautions touching any of the objects you are measuring like you have with the camera.

Thanks guys. The farmer says he has seen 3 different bears on his farms, none with cubs so hopefully I get to take one this year.

His ears look really big compared to his head and body. His legs look long even though the picture is from slightly above. I think this is a fairly small, young bear.

The first link with the coyote or wolf shows to me a sow and a cub, but thats my 30 second observation from the pics provided.
If the eyes are close together and the ears are small to the head then it would be a bigger bear not to mention the belly close to the ground.
Are these trophy class points to book on?
Nope, just some observations from the field and from the few bears I have shot, nor are they in any record books .
Check out a few more bears and see if you can spot those differences and be prepared for ground shrinkage after that.

Easy way to judge. If your going to bait a bear and use a 45 gallon drum. We have a saying. Put the bear in the drum. If it's smaller than the drum it's a youngin if he is as big as the drum or bigger shoot as its a good bear. Enjoy the hunt

Sorry the sow and cubs were a while ago. Had her and the cubs at 4 yards while in the ground blind. The one I was wondering about was the night trail cam pics. Thanks for the info but doesn't look like he liked the bait bc he hasn't been back again.
