Hi guys,

In may, we will be hunting black bear and would like to know beside size, how can one tell the difference between male and female bear tracks.

I 've heard stuff like the rear foot print left by a female or male (don't know which) is on an angle and you can tell but I don't know  so if one of you bear hunters could inform me on how to tell them apart, I would appreciate.

Thanks

As far as I know, the only way to tell is size. A good 5" wide front track equates to a 6' bear. Females rarely exceed 6' in size, though it is possible.

You probabley want to know the ### to comply with the family unit regs?

A female with cub(s) will have slightly smaller tracks following, crisscrossing or paralelling her sign.

The scat will be different for the kid too.

But .. you can't really trust any of this. It can give you a good idea, but nothing short of eyeballing the bear and watching for cubs can guarantee it.

bear tracks

Thanks guys,

I was perplexed concerning the angle thing, I guess it is carp  .

This question was posted on another forum as well and it seems that none are able to tell tracks apart, beside a guess about size and smaller tracks to indicate cubs, but that's it.

I'll continu looking... keep posting please

With all the difficulties with bears in the western provinces, wardens have taken to warning campers, hikers & fisherman to move about on well used trails, in pairs, talking somewhat loudly, wearing little bells on their clothing and to always carry bear spray.

Black bear scat is generally full of berry seeds and little bits of grass and rodent fur.

Grizzly scat on the other hand is full of little bells and smells like pepper spray !
