Soory for the noob question. I am looking for a shootgun for bears and ducks. I was looking at the ones with the exchangble barrel... like the Remington 870 Express
synthetic
12 gauge

Is this any good, or is there anything other alternative. I go into the bush a lot and need something easy to cary.
Thankyou very much.

Here's a question - are you hunting both, or is it bear defense and duck hunting?

The reason i ask is if you're hunting bear, a sluggun barrel is the way to go. But if it's just defense when hikeing, a shorter 18 inch barrel is probably more convenient, and will certanly beat the tar out of a bear with regular slugs.

Most shotguns have multiple barrels available. If you don't want to spend the money on the 870, a nice mossberg 500 is a good alternate choice. Lots of accessory barrels at reasonable prices.

I agree, a combo is an excellent choice. The 870 has been around for decades, and is a great action. Pick up the combo that includes the open sighted, non rifled barrel for Yogi. It has an Imporoved Cylinder choke, and will nicely handle rifled slugs,(NOT SABOT'S!!!) buckshot and birdshot. It's also a handy grouse gun in the tree's. Good luck.

A combo is a goo way to go. If it was me (but it is not me) I would just get a nice 23" 870 Turkey Gun.

Actually if it was me, I would have whatever my favourite duck gun of the day is... and a nice Winchester 94 Trapper in .44 mag... but it is not me.

Perhaps a cheaper solution than purchasing multiple barrels is to get a shotgun with a single 24" barrel length which is fitted with choke tubes. When you want to shoot bird-shot, thread in the modified or full choke for migratory, and a modified or improved cylinder for upland. When you want to shoot slugs you can thread in a cylinder choke tube or even a rifled choke tube.

A 24" barrel is a handy length for carrying, will give you a good sighting plane for birds, and a low powered scope could be mounted when you plan to hunt big game.

And don't let anyone tell you a 22"-24" bbl is too short for duck hunting. Most guys are shooting a 28" bbl but remember, an O/U with a 28" bbl, is about the same length (and sighting plane) as a pump or semi with a 24" bbl.

My buddy hunted for years aith a 21" 870... used it for everything. He now uses a 28" Citori 3.5" Hunter but if he could, he would get a 26".

thanks guy

I am getting a shot gun becuase there are huge bears where i live. I mean huge. The size of my little toyota truck. Anyway, they are not around now but they are going to wake up pretty oon and hungry. We hike around alot, so for safety reason I am going to get a shotgun for bears. But there are also lots of ducks around the area, so when my neighbours are going duck hunting I would like to go with them. We live in Oweekeno, Rivers Inlet,,, BC. IT is very remote here.

Thanks for your input.

Owikeno lake has some really big bears, I've been too close to a few too many of them unfortunately. Another good bear gun option is the Marlin Guide Gun, although not what you are looking for. Make sure you use good quality slugs and practice practice practice.
Cheers

If your carrying it while your hiking then I would get a 20" barrel, and for the duk hunting a 26". It take about 10 seconds to swap barrels on an 870
