Article in today's, July 12, Vancouver Sun about bears. They don't specifically say black bears, but that is what they mean.
They state of all the bears in Canada, one in three lives in BC!
They said the ratio with people is one bear for every 38 people.
Some bears are coming into North Vancouver and some smaller cities a bit, but by and large, they don't live in our cities. However, the overwhelming majority of BCers live in the major cities, so just think of the ratio of people to bears in the real world here. All of us that don't live in big cities are probably outnumbered by bears!
Wow.

Here's a dump bear at Dillon, SK. The 38 people weren't able to be in the picture!!:p

Was at a friend's place in Port Coquitlam last night, another buddy, who usually takes a walk across the Hyde Creek nature reserve to visit called to ask someone to pick him up instead because he opened his front door and there was a huge puddle of bear poop right in the centre of his lawn. Yep, they gettin' close!

I have to scoop bear poop before cutting my lawn a lot of the time.

This year has been bad, bears raiding my bbq, looking for garbage already in early summer. The local CO has had as many calls so far as the whole of last year.

This is of course black bears. But my theory is, as the griz are beginning to repopulate historical ranges, the black bear population is being pushed down to the lower elevations, finding easy food and hanging around the towns/dump.

Anyways, if this keeps up, it'll be like open season for CO's come fall in Rossland.

We've also had good crops of berries and such the last few years, so probably a good crop of blackies too now.
