Supposedly. I haven't seen one yet, but i usually carry slugs just in case. While loading up my shooting gear someone stopped by and said they had seen one an hour before. Made me wish I brought more gun than a .17 hmr.
I'm maybe 20Km cross country from the Marlborough Forrest, and I have a boar and a sow with a cub on my property, so I'd suspect that there's a few out that way too, they don't tend to live in isolation.
I've been hunting in there for a couple years now and haven't seen any, but I was talking to someone last year who said they know someone who hunts bear in there every year.
Had my Cadet Corps on a tour of Ottawa, long ago. Part of which was the museum on Rockcliffe. The guide told me they had bear tracks everywhere.
I'd be very surprised if there were no bears there.
