I am planning on hunting bear for the first time this year. The area I hunt in is within about 3.5km as the crow fly's from a now former dump(closed 1or2 years). The bear would have to cross a river around 200-225m across and a small row of houses to get to the dump. Would it be reasonable for the bear the cross these barriers? Basically wanting to know if I should bother hunting this year? And wait a few for the bears to clean up? Any opinions or experiences?

I grew up on Lake of the Woods. At the bottom of the lake there's a large expanse of water called The Big Traverse which is a big, open bay about 50 kms across. Once, when working for the MNR as a summer job we encounted a black bear swimming across it about 10 kms west of The Three Sisters (the nearest land). Not sure if he made it but if he was willing to cross that stretch, I'm sure your river would be no problem for any bear.

When Yogi wants to eat, a river or houses won't stop him. Likely at night though. The hunting regs no bear hunting within 400 meters of a dump. You're ok.

Ummm. Nothing tastes better than a nice used diaper feed bear...Sorry, had to add that in there.
