Anyone know of a way to discourage bears from being in an area? For the second year in a row, I've got black bears hanging around in the oak trees in my pasture that just happen to be where my favorite tree stand is. Archery deer opens Monday, and the deer are not coming anywhere near my stand because of the bears. Not to mention, I don't want them in my tree while I am...

Coincidentally, I beleive bear season opens the same day...and I thought maybe I'd just buy a tag and get rid of the problem that way, but they are 2 females with 2 cubs each. No go.

Anyone know of a better way than running out screaming at them every chance I get? When I run at them screaming like an idiot, they scramble down the tree and boogey off across my pasture, but they keep coming back.

Try hanging your coat or sweatshirt with your scent on the tree. That may be enough to keep them away. The deer will smell it too, but they are not coming anyway...

Some people use bear bangers, just makes a loud noise, but again the deer will not like it either...

Sorry, should have mentioned that...I've been hanging t-shirts with my scent on the treestand for the last couple of months to get the deer accustomed to it. As of early this week, the deer were coming right up to it...the bears are climbing over it to get up the tree.

Well, you could always bait them on the opposite side of your property...

They will eventually leave.
We had one spend a few days here up in the oaks, gone now.
They are on the move.
Best just to avoid interaction as best you can.
I also piss around the base of the trees.

Thanks Blargon. They are really after them damn acorns, I might have to try though...

Last year, they stayed right until after snow fell. Kind of ruined my archery hunt.

Word from our Bear Smart crew would be to pick the acorns and get rid of the attractant. :D Electric fence around the trees might discourage them as well.

Find some friends with bear tags and buy one yourself and shoot them all. They are being a nuisance, damaging your precious oak trees anyhow. Then it's time for a sausage party!

Unfortuntately, they are sows with cubs. Can't legally hunt them or I would.

I've been popping them in the a$$ with a pellet gun everytime I see them out there, and now they seem to have stopped coming around. Maybe it worked...
