Another nice day for turkey hunting. Worked a good mature tom for 30 minutes but couldn't pull him in closer than 60 yds. They seem to be cruising by themselves in our area already. Took a quick picture while we caught a breather and thought I'd share it. If anyone has any other pics of your hunting area, add them on.

How many different calls do you do when set up. I just have a quaker boy Yelper and they don't seem to respond much to it right now, but they sure lit up when the flock of geese flew overhead honking away.

I should try the decoy thing some time

I carry 4 types of calls with me at all times. 1) homemade boxcall, 2) push button yelper, 3) homemade slate pot call, 4) assorted mouth calls. If I am setup right near roosted birds I always start out with quiet tree yelps from my pot call. Switch to the mouth call if needed when I have the gun up & ready. If I'm looking for birds, I'll start out with loud yelps & excited cutting on the box call. I also like to mix up the calls so I might sound like more than 1 hen. Seems to work well for me. Some people swear by the decoys, & some people don't care for them. They are somewhat bulky & are a pain to carry. I usually put them out at about 25m in front of my setup.

I've shot turkeys with and without decoys, although the decoys may keep the toms hanging around for a few minutes, where without them, the toms do a "run & strut", and don't hang around long.

I carry 3-4 calls, usually an aluminum or glass call with 3 different pegs, (hickory, carbon, and rosewood) If its damp at all the carbon works flawless. I also carry a push button hen call, a challenging jake call, and a mouth call. Probably only need one call, but what the heck...

If I have a tom gobbling first thing in the AM, I'll give a few calls with the Challenging Jake call, that really gets them going:) But if there's only jakes around that call may push them away.

Thanks for the tips, I have been having nothing but close calls lately. In years past the turkeys were dumb as posts but this year they have really smartened up.

I'll have to go shopping for some different turkey calls and try new techniques.
