Is it worth it to try to bed a hs precison stock on my 700 VSF and if so how is it done?

I've done bedding on laminate and walnut stocks but nothing with an aluminum bedding block so I'm not sure how to do it or whether it's worth it.

The gun is stock other than having the crown touched up and shoots well. I'm just the kind of guy that likes to tweak his guns for fun.

Mine are bedded on top of the block.Apply the bedding compound on the areas where it touches a screw in the action.Let it set over night and then take it out and clean it up.There are a few other things you can do to make it easier, but the question was should you do it.The answer is yes.

just remove the action and take a look on the bottom part of it....you will see areas of contact (aluminum residue on the steel action), these are the points of contact....so, it`s not a 100% contact between action and blocks...
so, it shows that you NEED bedding :)))

Many of them don't sit with the barrel centered in the barrel channel.

I suggest wrapping masking tape around the barrel, enough so it holds the barrel centered and the action without rocking when you push down on it...

then a little glass bedding like any other bolt action, using only the rear screw to hold the action square with NO tension.

If you do a bedding job where you just apply a thin layer of beedding material like Longshot has suggested what bedding compound are you using? Would materials like acragel not just crack with such a thin layer?

I have a savage 10FCP with hs precision stock on the way... do you recommend bedding that stock, or will it be fine out of the box?

i have the same gun and it shoots so well i didnt bother bedding it for fear that it might change how it shoots. i know a couple guys that said they just skim bedded the front block and it worked for them. dont know if its true but thats what i heard.

Brownell's Acraglass and gel works fine... it has for me for 40 years.

Just

because the HS stocks have the aluminium bedding block does not mean they DO NOT require bedding.

Bed them. They do not fit the action like a surgeons glove to his hand. Bedding mates the action to the stock that much better and takes another factor out of the equation in regards to accuracy.

Do as Guntech mentioned and things will work out just fine. The IMPORTANT thing is as he mentioned STRESS FREE bedding.

I would rough the surface of the block with 100 grit, degrease thoroughly, trial fit with tape around the barrel in the channel till you get the fit you are wanting to achieve. Then bed.

It will turn out looking like a charm.;)
