I have bedded before -- usually mauser type rifles,...... I have Rem 788 in .358 win that the action sits in / on the stock like a cheap cooey .22. Any suggestions on how to bed the back of the action where it merely sits on the stock and the back action screw itself is loose within the hole in the stock? should one just make a little pad under that area? I figure the front recoil lug and bbl is the same as always - bed to the rear of the lug but leave a couple of tho to the side and fronty of the lug.

I traditionally dont bed the entire action - only the front and rear.

I really didnt want to go so far as pillar bedding. Any suggestions?

thanks guys -- i did the whole receiver as you suggested, i.5 inch ahead of the lug. I will shoot it asap and see how it all came together.

full receiver bedding came out nice, set the action just about 1/16 higher with the gel compound to about 1.5 inch ahead of recoil lug -- free floated the bbl, shoots ragged one clover leaf at 100 yds (3 shots) out of the ron smith re-bore with factory 200 gr. , quite pleased,

thanks for the help.
