Hey guys, it has become apparent that my XLR stock needs to be bedded, at least the recoil lug, and maybe the whole action. I noticed my bolt handle is impacting the corner of the bolt handle recess in the stock. When I loosen the screws a tad, there is a small amount of front to back play.

Now the question. With aluminum, what would be the best bedding agent? Acraglass, Bedrock, or maybe JB weld as mentioned on other sites.

Any advice appreciated.

My guess would be to rough it up a bit and go with a Devcon aluminum agent.?

I've used Devcon on two different guns. It's messy but easy to work with and it seems to be the one that is most recommended. If you go with Devcon one necessity to buy would be break cleaner. Break cleaner will clean off Devcon and if you make a mistake the break cleaner become invaluable.

Lots of Internet tutorials out there.

Oh, and don't use plumber putty. It'll mix a bit with the Devcon and will give a shi$$y finish. I say use plastesine.

The only negative for Devcon is the price. I got a point of the stuff and I think it was 60$. Actually negative # 2, it's the kind of smell that makes you wonder if you're killing brain cells while you're working with it.

Thanks guys! The Devcon product is a new one on me. I found a liquid/pourable, and a paste type. I can see the liquid being great for the lug, but it seems too runny (based on ad photos) to use else where in the action. Are you using paste?

i've bedded countless stocks using devcon steel, imo there is nothing better. i would advise against brake cleaner for clean-up, wd 40 and a box of q-tips is the way to go. when bedding, the results are 95% prep.

I had my XLR bedded by John Grech at Grech Outdoors in Mount Forest when he was chambering my new barrel. I think he used Devcon, but not sure, you may want to call him. He did a beautiful job, gun is shooting .25 MOA all day.

I would recommend the Devcon after using Acraglass gel and JB weld. It was recommended by a couple custom gun builders in the US to either use the Plastic Devcon or the Titanium the later being very expensive so I opted for the Plastic Devcon $47 at Ackland Graingers for the one pound. The results were very good and much better then the Acraglass or JB. I would also recommend the WD 40 with Q tips for clean up as well as the KIWI clear natural shoe polish for release agent apply multiple coats and polish it thin. I was also told the Devcon steel is also good but some guys think the Titanium and plastic are a bit better.

It depends entirely on how you mix it.

For best results Devcon should be mixed by weight! I mixed the whole one pounder by scraping the hardener as clean as I could this seemed to work real good. I am sure some gunsmiths buy larger containers so end up mixing by weight.

Ok, I got the Devcon 10110 Plastic Steel putty. Had Acklands bring it in. No, just got to find time and the nerve to get 'er done!
