Ok I am looking at getting a crossbow as to exend the hunting season by a few weeks. They are legal to hunt with here. I have looked around on the site and at a few web sites and Excaliber seem to be the #1 choice but they also seem a bit pricey for a first bow. Any other recomendations out there ??
Place to look for one ?? Type of bolt and broadhead ??

They seem to be good out to 40 yrds ?? Is that about correct. I am totally new and will have to practice with whatever I decide to get.

The excalibur may be pricey, however I bought a Horton saved a few bucks.
So was not worth it. It does not compare. I have a few buddies who shot the Excalibur and I'd say they are hard to beat.

Remember X-mas is coming.

40 yards good max, some guys will say you can go further, but not consistently.

Both my hunting course and firearms course instructors gave two pieces of advice. Both acknowledged that they were not supposed to officially recommend any particular brands, but wished to save us much trouble. One was to stick with Excalibur for crossbows and the other was to stick with Remington 870s, at least at first and for pump guns. I took their advice on both and have not looked back. I'm now interested in other bows (vertical bows) and other shotguns (currently pining for a 16 ga SxS), but I can certainly see now that these were the places to start. Not only the places to start, but I'll probably retain both the xbow and the 870, and always hunt with them.

Excaliber is the best by far for simplicity and unparalleled accuracy. :) I've had mine for about 8 years now and havent had a problem with it.
Still the same zero as when first set. That means solid to me...

I have the Exocet, and have shot a good number of deer with it. But I've learned to keep shots at 35 yds as max.

They may seem pricey up front compared to others, but in the long run you'll appreciate their very effective design .:D

I have the phoenix excal and practice shooting up to 50yds with my broadheads (wasp 100gr 11/8" cutting dia) and can hit 4" circle on almost every shot (from the bench) with it. I keep my hunting shots to 40 yds max.... These things are practically guaranteed for life.....

I'm an xbow newbie. Bought an Excaliber, and really am happy with it. In the first six shots I split an arrow with another one. They are accurate and simple. You can change the string in the field, with a compound you need a bow press.

Mine was missing two screws no big deal, called Excaliber and got sincere apologies from their customer service. They said the screws would be shipped that day and they were. Top notch people to deal with.

A Canadian company to boot.

Excalibur isnt the only solid bow company they make recurves thats great but what about the guy who hunts a small stand or an inclosed blind? a compound xbow is nearly 12'' narrower then the recurve design......
The Tenpoint bows are a good product on the compound design

Then for recurves the Horton Legacy 225 is a very fast recurve and matches the excalibur exomax in performance and quality it also comes with a life time warrenty and is cheaper then the excalibur.

Excalibur has been around for the longest in the recurve market but other companies have caught up like Horton and Middleton.....Excalibur is a great bow but I believe with all the other options on the market now their price is way to high.

I have a Horton crossbow. I purchased it used from a cousin-in-law, it was two years old. I would have gone for an Excalibur if this offer hadn't come up.

The Horton is a touch narrower, so if you are in tight stuff it might be a bit more comfortable. The Excalibur is made in Canada, and they have a phenomenal reputation as being very good to deal with - parts, service, warranty, etc...

Excalibur !

I agree with everyone else, I bought an Excalibur last year, and on Saturday afternoon took my first deer with it. At 25 yards, it was dead on ! The lumizone scope is awesome too.

The only thing I wish is that someone made a hardcase that would fit it for offseason storage and travel protection.

The newer fitted soft case looks nice, I may try one of those

Wall Mart, $40, taking an Excaliburs riser off has absolutly no affect on the point of impact after it is put back together, none.

Excalibur Exomag owner here. Super accurate xbow!

Pros:
Excaliburs are light/well balanced (not front heavy), incredibly accurate (superior 3lb. crisp trigger), and simple to maintain (i.e. string changes on your own).

Cons:
They are wider and noisier than compounds and do not have a dry fire protection(However, dry firing does not harm this xbow. Sometimes the string may come off, but it's easy to put back on as it requires no bow press like compounds do).

I have the Excalibur Y25 Relayer and am very happy with it. Compared to my Mathews vertical it'll shoot twice as deep in my target and twice as easy to aim, they are killers...super accurate, extremely fast and POWERFUL. I do enjoy hunting and practicing with my vertical more, just like the feel of physically pulling back and releasing.

If you can find a good used Phoenix package for around $500 grab it right away!
