Hey guys,

I'm a beginner with some limited shooting experience with .22's in the past in some small competitions as a kid. Now looking to step it up and get a rifle, probably a .223 bolt action to start venturing into some sport shooting with hopes of getting into competition down the line. Any recommendations on good rifles out of the box to get and what kind of optics would get me started? I am wanting to spend around $800 on the gun. So far I have seen that the Rem 700 series are good guns and some people like the Savage rifles, some don't. Any ideas? Looking for a gun with a good quality and precise shot out of the box. I have looked up some rules to go by for competitions so I guess something 20" barrel or over, .5kg trigger pull. Any other recommendations would be awesome!!! thanks in advance.

Contact your local Provincial Rifle Association and get out to one of their practices or matches. Have a look around and ask lost of questions. You will get more information in a few hours than you will reading for hours on the internet.
