Beginner rifle: Stevens or remington?

Also, what should I be looking at as far as barrel length? The SPS tactical has a 20" barrel, while the varmint has a 26" barrel. The Savage model 12's also have 26's.

And how does the Savage Accu-trigger compare to Remingtons x-mark trigger?

Thanks

I know many MANY serious precison shooters from around the world. With the exception of Team Savage and Jerry Teo, I know of none using Savage in custom guns used for competition. Also, except for Bill Leeper, Henry Rempel and Mick McPhee, every serious shooter I know lets an expert gunsmith take care of the most important parts of creating an ultra precise rifle.
I mean no disrespect and you know your stuff when it comes to guns ,but
you may know many many many serious precison shooters from around the world, But there are thousands and thousands of serious precison shooters around the world as well that you dont know .You are right many people use the remington actions to build rifles , but they have also been around for a heck of a long time and if it works why fix it ? .Savage on the other hand dident have a great rep up untill about 10 years ago , but now with cost of the rifles, the ease of trigger adjustment, the accuracy they are giving , the ease of swaping barrel and the easy platform to build a precison rifle you can see more people moving over to savage.
There are lots of people into precison shooting that dont compeate or belong to clubs because of some of the anal crap that gose with the sport as well ............

Sorry, you missed the 2010 Farky. Close to 1/3 of the field were shooting Savages or rifles based on their actions. Quite a few juniors shooting pretty darn well too. pretty sure, one of them placed 3rd overall in F Open.

Didn't someone win the FTR outright with a Savage at the Farky two years ago?

Might want to spend some time viewing US and Int sites. LOTS of Savages being used in competition rifles. And I am sure you have seen the rapid increase of Savage competition rifles being used with a bit of TLC.

In fact, demand is so high that Eliseo now makes chassis for them. He competed with a box stock rig in his rifle and 'stunned' the competition.

A US 500 or 600yds record was set a year or two ago by a junior shooter with a Savage. The article should be on Hornady's site as she was using Amax bullets. The Savage was just a happy coincidence.

2010 pics of the US Nats had a variety of Savage rifles on the line. Archived pics on 6mmBR.com if you are interested.

The Brits have at least a couple of smiths putting these rigs together and doing well over there.

Same goes for the Aussies. Not sure how New Zealand is coming along - last conversation with a competitor, they were having issues with their importer.

Etc, etc, etc.

Look at my website and you will likely see more and more rifles built on Savage actions and of course Rems.

As we have discussed on numerous occasions, I couldn't care less which action a shooter chooses as long as they just get out and shoot. If the chevy/ford debate gets more interest and excitement, all the better.

However, saying a brand is simply no good, doesn't give an accurate view of reality.

Don't like it? Don't use it. But there is little point in beating dead the point that you don't like a process or product.

We get it, you hate Savages. Many many many others don't.

This is precisely why neophytes should stay away from forums like this to get objective advice.

I think Bill Leeper, Henry Rempel and Mick McPhee do indeed let an expert gunsmith take care of the most important parts of creating an ultra precise rifle...

The 700 is my choice for the strongest, safest, extremely accurate and the best trigger... and the most aftermarket goodies... and it doesn't really cost that much ... not even when you customize it...

I can't remember the last time I read a post on either a Savage or Remington action failing because it wasn't strong enough. Actually I don't think I've ever read one post regarding any action failing.

The odds of seeing this happen is slim to nil UNLESS someone really puts effort into the task.

The brass case will fail long before the action does unless negligent practises are used.

Since both makes have housed the largest boomers are in circulation in bucket loads for at least 50yrs, I really can't see where this strength debate keeps coming up. It is like saying my tires are rounder then yours.

How much rounder is round?

But if it makes one feel better.....

YMMV

I think why the strongest, safest two lug bolt action keeps coming up is simply because the the production of the 700 series actions set a precedent that has not been surpassed.

I agree that the superior gas handling abilities of the 700 with it's unique extractor rarely come into play... it takes a rare catastrophic case failure to show how well a 700 with the original extractor system stands up without harming the shooter. No other 2 lug action seals as well...
