Hey guys

I have a Ruger new vaquero, in .357mag, on order and will be looking to get a single holster gun belt setup for it.

I’ve never owned gun leather like this, so am looking for any tips or recommendations on a setup for someone just getting into it. Fitting, things to look for in quality, etc.

Any recommendations on good manufacturers or places to buy. Also wouldn’t mind some info on where I could find second hand gear.

Reply to this thread or DM me if you have information.

Thank you

For your first belt and holster, you DO NOT want to spend a lot of money. If you eventually show an interest in Cowboy Action shooting you will require a more modular setup to carry everything that you need, plus that fits in a location on your belt that suits your style of shooting.

You could try Tandy Leather, though some assembly required. They have holster patterns along with material and tools, and even if the result is no better than you can do yourself, there is that feeling of accomplishment and being able to choose the shape and features you want.

Two Canadian sources that may be helpful: Working Cowboy Leather(Chatham. Ontario). Marstar(site sponsor). Should offer some idea into what may work for you. For used gear, go to: OSASF (Ontario Single Action Shooting Federation) website. Look under classifieds. You could also inquire in the The OSASF 'Wanted to buy' section.
There are plenty of gun leather makers in the U.S., if this is another option for you. A quick Google search will turn up any number of choices. As Garand already mentioned, for your first set of leather, you may not want to spend a lot of money. So shop around and research carefully, before buying. But, in leather as in all things, you get what you pay for. Good quality leather can get pricey. So, keep this in mind, as you make your choice.
There may even be a few sources, right here on CGN.
You will like your new Ruger New Vaquero. Well built, reliable and accurate. Plenty of sources for parts, etc., too. While you're on the OSASF site, be sure to check out: Black Sheep Brass. A good source for once-fired .357/.38 brass. Special discount for SASS(Single Action Shooting Society) members, too. Worth a look.
Good luck.

Aabradsh: Quick follow up...The 'Ottawa Valley Marauders' cowboy action club is in your vicinity. Please do contact one of the fine folks there, for info on used leather, etc.

Edit: If you're fairly handy and might like to make your own holster, check out the: Duelist1954 website. Host: Mike Beliveau, recently posted a two-part video series, on how to make a single-action revolver holster. This may be useful.
