As the title says, I'm a beginner. I want to get a cheap rifle to just shoot and mess around, also take it the woods when I'm backpacking. SKS or SKS-D sounds good to me, as I'm a fan of EastBloc firearms. Are they same? Are they easy to maintain and clean? I've read that you need to strip it clean the foist time and clean it. Is take down difficult?

No military rifle is hard to take apart. Kind of a basic requirement.

The D mag SKS uses AK type mags. The fixed mag version is self explanatory.

Yes, clean it very well. They are usually caked with cosmolin.

They are non restricted, cheap to shoot, moderately accurate, dead reliable most of the time, simply more fun then their price would suggest.

Yup. An SKS is a good first gun. They were in fact designed for untrained soldiers and to be built by unskilled factory workers. (I exagerrate a bit, but you get the idea.)

Spend your money getting a case of several hundred rounds of ammo. After you've cleaned the grease out and lightly oiled the parts, go shooting. What you learn now with a cheap gun and cheap ammo will make your next purchase decision that much better informed.
