I have just picked up a Rem 700 VS in 308, and I would like to do some long range shooting with it. It doesn't have a scope on it right now and with out a huge investment what kind of scope should one use for 300 yard shooting. I have some to choose from that have come off of hunting rifles, 4-16x40 4200, 4-12x40 3200, 3-10x40 3200. Would one of these be a good choice for trying to learn some long range shooting? Or should I look at buying something different?
Can you please tell me which type of ammo to begin with, Thanks FS

hi,
You might want to try a 10 power fixed scope for that kind of range, 150 gr FMJ will work well but every rifle will settle into its favorite load. Try to get decent turret rings on your scope- bullet drop compensation is where its at if you plan on doing strictly long range work. You could find a scope like that for about 300.00 at the low end, however as you know you get what you pay for.

I don't have much experience, but as for bullet type, I've found the Remington 700's I've shot and been around in .308 like the 175 grain Sierra HPBT's the best, but some like the 168's better.
What's your budget in regard to a scope? I've never used a 4200 or a 3200 but I've heard good things about both, especially the 10x 3200 tactical. I've got a Leupold Mk4 4.5-14x50 on order for myself.

Put your 4-16 on it, buy yourself some 168 gr match bullets and a can of Varget, and go to town. Your Rem may prefer 175s, but all but one of the 308s I've had preferred the 168s (and that one prefers 190s, actually). - dan

If I am reading your question the same way as Dan ( that you already own these scopes), I would also go with the 4-16X.
Varget rules!!

buy some Federal GoldMedalMatch in 168 and 175 try them both find what your gun likes...

get the fixed 10 3200(it has target knobs) and go shooting

update your scope and start handloading after you get a feel for it

I'm going to have to strongly agree with Jamie on this one. I would for sure buy the federal gold medal 168's. I have a 700P and that's all I use. In fact that ammo coupled with that rifle can shoot alot better then I can. But ammo is definately something that you don't want to cheap out on, it makes all the difference.
As far as the glass goes... I know that the bushnell 10x40 3200 mildot scope is an excellent scope for the money. I would venture to say that it's the best scope for the money to do what you want it to do. My only concern is that you may grow out of it too soon and want something better. I say this because I have seen it happen. All too often you see guys buying those scopes and then 5-6 months down the road forking out the 1000+ for a leupold or equivalent. If I were you I would spend the dollars once and be done with it. Unfortunately precision long range shooting is not somewhere you can cheap out on your kit and expect results.

I agree, always get the best Glass you can afford...in a pinch for the money the 3200 fixed ten will do

and as far as Varget,it is the powder for the 308!!!so is 4064,Re-15.....

I'm with the 4-16x group. Hopefully it has an A/O (I think it does).

Is this just to see what bullet weight your rifle likes? I'd buy this ammo, but it's bloody expensive.

see if it like the 168 or 175(and hope it likes the 175 more:dancingbanana: )

you get get some match brass out of the deal, then get some Varget or Reloader 15 CCI BR-2 primers and off to the reloading races you go

Jamie Barkwell

I should add that the Norma match ammo was the best shooting factory ammo I have ever shot even better(in my Rifle)then Lapua

I went with the Sierra 168 HPBT with Varget underneath and the Busnnell 3200 10x40 optics on my VS. It may not be the absolute best money can buy but it gives me a 2" group at 300m off the bipod.

Oh ok that's what I thought. Yeah I'll likely end up doing that after I get some more range time and pay off my scope.

alot of guys don't like federal brass but I never had any problems with it and I found it work awsome in my rifle...

Jamie Barkwell

Ahh that Norma's just limp. Every time I sighted on fed match, I had to pull down the scope to get the Norma in the same spot... Up down, up down, up down - mind you, it gives you something to do when you're bored putting one on top of another all afternoon long. How yah doin', son. ;)

I am doing good pa;)

the Norma 168 did shoot a tad lower for me too...but it shot very tiny groups (.46MOA at 100 yards)out to 600yards but got harder to find for me....the brass is first rate and I have been told that Canadian Snipers used that round (168grHPBT)in the days of the .308
