Just inherited my Grandfather Browning 12g Auto 5 Magnum what I figured out with reasearch is its full choke just unsure if I can use steel shot.

Help me out guys whats your thoughts??

No,no, and no, you can have a gunsmith ream the choke to light mod. and then you are good to go, I have done some A-5s and they are a major pain in the butt. Not sure if it's harder steel or just more of it, but it takes a while!!!

No steel shot.

Better than messing up the original barrel on your g fathers gun...buy a loose barrel with invector chokes or a Hastings barrel as either is good to go with steel.

I have the same gun but not a magnum. I got the choke reamed to a modified choke by a gunsmith and I shoot steel out of it but I keep the shot size at BB or smaller, and I have not had any problems at all. Talk to a gunsmith, open your choke to modified and enjoy your grandfathers gun.

Gunsmiths don't like opening the choke on them 'cuz those old Brownings have a very well designed choke, with a parallel section after the taper. But it can be done, and I do recommend it. Open it up to about 25 thousandths, and have fun shooting ducks and geese.

I've got a '64 non-magnum and my 'smith says he's opened up about 40 of them to modified with no bring backs.
