Well, I'm finally moving on a long overdue first build. I have a Savage 116 donor action I'm planning on turning into a 35 Whelen to create a unique moose rifle.

Savage has always seemed to lack many options in the aftermarket, but I stumbled across Bell and Carlson and took a shine to their product. I've had it in mind for this build pretty much since I decided to buy the action years ago.

Curious to hear others feedback on the B&C stocks. One point I'm especially interested in is the barrel channel. I'm planning on a McGowan #4 contour and curious if the channel will be big enough to accommodate a heavier barrel. I haven't really messed around much with synthetic stocks, so not sure opening up the channel is even possible on these stocks. If it turns into a hassle I might try and find a more appropriate hunting-stlye stocks, or as a last resort change up barrel profile to something lighter.

Any insight or comments appreciated!

What stock are you looking at?
I have used them for 700's.

The M40, Varmint/Tactical, Target/Competition, will fit a heavy barrel.
Sporter style may fit a slightly heavier barrel than stock. You may need to modify. They do grind down easily. But matching up the color could be difficult.

Hope this helps.

Apologies, I'm looking at the Savage Sporter stock, item #1017.

According to McGowan, the #4 Medium sporter contour maintains the straight taper at the chamber for an extra 0.12" and the muzzle is only 0.025" greater diameter than their regular sporter barrel.

If I only have to take some sand paper and a dowel to the extend for the taper than it shouldn't be too bad I wouldn't think.

You can open up the contour with sandpaper for minor increases. Major amount of material removal is not advised since the strength of the shell (monocoque) will be comprised

I have found many B & C stocks with barrel channels off center, inletting depths of top and bottom metal not correct. It usually takes a lot of work. B & C is at the bottom of my list.

I have two full custom rifles which have the B&C Medalist stocks. They are very rigid, robust and get the job done. Your McGowan #4 will fit inside of the barrel channel. Both of my customs have sporter contours where one is .660" at the muzzle and the other .630". They are great stocks and enjoy them in the field and on the bench. If Weatherby uses them for their rifles, well.......................

Guntech,

What would you recommend as an alternative? I jump on the B&C bandwagon simply because it was a sporter style stock available for a Savage action, and heck, they look cool with spiderweb paint jobs and are easy on the billfold. All that said, I am by no means dead set on them, just seemed like a good option easily available in Canada.

You have the floor, what are the differences?

I think the B & C stocks that are on factory rifles are better than the aftermarket B&C stocks I have had to inlet, refit and glass.

Just be aware that B & C stocks may come with some flaws that require a lot of work.

I think there are a lot of aftermarket synthetic stocks... I have been out of retail so long I am not aware of them all. When I was supplying stocks, McMillan and Brown Precision were my favourites. I think Wildcat Stocks in Alberta are producing a pretty good stock.
