Bella Coola Grizzly Bear Charge (October 2018)

Easy to criticise a guy with Grizzlies in his backyard near his kids, from a place without Grizzlies is my take. Not saying anyone is doing that here. He could have dealt with it better, yes, but many decisions in the moment in life if given the benefit of hindsight are less than ideal. Appears all has worked out here, bear will survive, so did he. Doubt he’d try it again, Grizzlies are a whole other creature from anything else Canada has.

polar bear aside.

I have seen Polar bears that were shot in the ass with bird shot, infected painful and just itching to tell someone about it. If you are going to put a hole in it you need to kill it. He should not have gone out side after the bear, that's what the CO's are for. You can't just shoot something a little bit .Flame suit on.

100% agreement. No such thing as shooting something a little bit.

Benefit of hindsight though, he wasn't intending to shoot the bear at all, rather use the shotgun as a banger. I'm assuming he picked birdshot over slugs for safety... though slugs fired into that lawn beside the bear would seem plenty safe to me. Maybe he didn't have anything else... who knows. That bear needs to be found and put down though.

Was it necessary at all? Good question. Didn't seem to be any immediate threat, but who knows how the COs respond out there to bear calls... fish cops said he was justified, so there's that, which suggests it wasn't a viable alternative. Otherwise I'm assuming they would have said he should have called them.

on the last three black bears we hunted two of them had .22s and bird shot leads on the body so seems there is a pattern for people shooting bears it is a shame and i ve learnt you do not shoot at unless you wanted to kill seems things are done differently nowadays.

One of my clients shot an old boar and upon skinning it, we found five bullets under the hide, two .22 LR, a 170 grain .30-30 silver tip, a .30 caliber that was fully mushroomed and a hard cast that looked like it came from a .45/70... all of the wounds were older and fully healed... the bear ultimately succumbed to a well placed arrow.
