I am thinking about getting a rifle and pistol bench rest to ensure that I am extracting maximum accuracy from my reloads. I have looked around and seen simple plastic extrusions to rather elaborate metal and leather.

The leather sandbags that I use are good but there has to be a better, easier way.

What do you guys use? Pros, cons?

I use a Harris bipod on the front and sometimes a bag on the rear, both from the bench and prone. Sitting I use shooting stix. I want my range sessions to be as similar as possible as my field shooting positions. Sure it may not always get the tightest groups possible, but it's more realistic and good practise.

For "maximum accuracy', you want a heavy, solid, quality front rest, and good rear bag or rest.
Sounds cliche, but the more it costs, generally the better. Check out some good ones at Sinclairs, or, if you want the REAL business - go to
www.mannersstocks.com ($$$$)

I agree with the above - and, if you really want accuracy, don't try and combine a rifle and pistol rest into one piece of equipment. Vastly different requirements.

I use a manufactured steel rest for my rifles, simply because I have it for benchrest shooting. But it weighs 20 pounds and is not suitable for trying out a hunting load, under field conditions.

For pistols I would love to get the best - a Ransom Rest. But I will have to wait and cash in a number of cheques to get one of those.:p
