I recently acquired a custom 6.5-05 based on a LR Mauser action with a zero taper heavy barrel, about 1.25" diameter. I am looking to restock this gun with an appropriate stock as it currently sits in a brutally ugly, modified military stock.

While browsing some stock suppliers, I found one that offers some very nice laminated wood stocks with a selection of forend widths, from 2 1/2" to 4". I'm not familiar with benchrest stocks and I'm looking for some input on the forend dimension for this gun. I assume 2 1/2" is too narrow to have much strength in the forend, but I don't want to go too wide. An input is welcome. This gun is just for my own enjoyment, I'm not a competitive shooter.

And if anyone happens to have an extra LR mauser target stock just lying around, feel free to PM me!

Some benchrest tops come standard for 3 inch forends. Of course you can get custom made tops for up to 8" forends at w ww.viperbench-rest.com
