Sorry, this is probably a newb question but I have yet to find an answer.

What is the purpose of the square at the top of the circles on the Benchrest Targets.

Back in the 40's, 50's, and 60's they did not have the scope powers that they have today. Sure thet had 36X Unertls, a lot of 20X Lymans and the 3200 Redfield at 24X but the crosshairs were, to say the least were thick. The targets were designed in those days to creat an aiming point, "a big black aiming square" I remember when I got my first benchrest scope, a Redfield 3200 at 24X which the factory would boost to 28X but that made the crosshair thick enough to block out the 10 ring, so to speak. Now we have scopes that will quarter a 6mm hole at a 200yds. Technology has change, but not the target. And do yourselve a favour, don't try. It came up for discussion at a meeting awhile back and I thought they were going to run the guy out on a rail. Anyway I hope that answers your question.
