I was in two firearms stores today, and I shouldered the new Benelli 828U shotgun. I don't think that I have ever been less impressed by an O/U shotgun in this price range. The synthetic comb insert ruined an otherwise nice piece of wood, but the plastic shroud over the top barrel was not only hideous, but it seemed to be in the way, and it looked to be quite flimsy as well.

I also noticed that some firearms prices are still climbing significantly, and it was especially noticeable with the Browning O/U shotguns. New stock had just arrived, and the new guns were being priced $200 to $300 above the shotguns already in stock. One store had an old stock Citori Lightning at under $1900, and the new stock in the other store were priced at over $2300 for the same gun. That store actually had an old stock White Lightning on for $100 less than the new stock Lightning. If you are currently thinking about a new firearm, now might be a good time to buy, if you can find a dealer with old stock.

I've been seeing outrageous pricing on new guns recently. Its actually pretty scary to see firearms that were retailing at around $1300 a few years ago being retailed at $2000 today. Its funny because I have also seen two price points on the same model of gun at the same retailer. As you mentioned, old stock being priced significantly less then new stock. Same goes for ammo....if you can actually find what you're after!

As for the Benelli 828U, not a fan of the gun at all. And I agree with regards to the synthetic comb. What a dumb feature that is. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess

I found that silly plastic shroud over the top barrel much more alarming, plastic like that has no place on a $3500 shotgun.

Had a chance to shoot one recently.
Certainly an odd beast.
With AA handicap trap loads it was unpleasant to shoot due to recoil. I attributed that to the light weight.
Like most "reolutionary ( or perhaps evolutionary) designs" beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Edsel, Ljutic space gun, UGB 25Excel, All functional, but with limited attraction to a traditionalist.
Ugly is such a unkind word.

I have to agree that the Benelli's have zero appeal to me given that you can get lightweight brownings and berettas. I bet they have more appeal to a younger / video game generation that want something more modern looking.

I remember the Ljutics. They were asking big bucks for these in the 80's.

That was exactly it. I owned numerous Franchi's that were all very lightweight guns. Volume shooting even with target loads was punishing. Light guns are great if you're spending most of your time carrying it and not shooting it
