So I took the plunge today and bought a Benelli m4 from wolverine. I want to hunt ducks this fall, but haven't done it in years . I'm new to steelshot.

I understand modified choke is better..(true?). I want the most range from this short gun I can get. I see "Extended range Crio ", and a number of extended chokes from Carlsons and Patternmaster ($).

Anybody used these in a short barrel for ducks/geese? Am I wasting money? Is the modified choke with steelshot plenty for pass/decoy shooting?
Many thanks from an old upland gunner!

An M4 for ducks and geese? Good god! You should be able to use it but your effectiveness will be limited by the stock which is largely designed for aiming, the short barrel and the lack of a rib. Modified should be fine for half decent patterns but you will have a difficult time swinging a gun like that on ducks and geese. Good luck,

Patrick

Not sure about 18.5" but I know a lot hunters over at the refuge forums uses 24" for ducks passing / over decoy and they are deadly.

You will notice the gun swing a lot faster and you don't have a long sighting plane due to short barrel.

However, some claim your hunting partner will hate you to dead due to muzzle blast on a shorter barrel especially hunt from a blind you buddies might suffer from lost of hearing.:D

Apparently (I'm no expert) the pattern has more to do with choke than barrel length, so 18.5 inches shouldn't be bad ( I'm not really a fan of duck meat anyway LOL).

I may get kicked out of the blind if it is too loud, for sure, perhaps I'll bring a spare bit of cover!

As for swing, I used my brother's mossberg defender style short barrel at the skeet range, and it swung fine, so this one should be okay for a once a year duck/goose guy.

Buds regardless of barrel length and chokes you've entered into a whole new level.
Enjoy the Benelli "Koolaid". I run a extra full for turkey FWIW.

:agree:

I might try my newly accquired Beretta 1201FP for ducks / upland too just for fun.

One more thing remember if you hunt in Ontario (not sure about other Province) make sure to check your mag capacity won't hold no more than 2 rounds plus one in chamber, my 1201FP has no plug it will hold 5 rounds in the mag.

Your shorter barrel will limit your effective range somewhat. I've found my short barrel doesn't hold it's shot pattern as well as my longer barrel with the same choke. While each gun is a different case, you will have significantly lower pellet velocities out of your 18.5" compared to the traditional 30" barrel, so you'll likely increase the likelihood of a crippled bird at longer ranged shots.

The extra 1.5" of the extended choke won't make enough of a difference for you to notice on ducks.

Good news, that short barrel is quick to get on target, so you'll be first one to shoot, or miss a duck.

I've used my M4 for trap... 19/25 the first time I tried it...:D

Thanks for the tips, gents. We're going to be jumping ducks and shooting over decoys. I'll keep my shots in close to avoid the cripples..
