I recently bought an S&J mag extension for my Benelli M4 which is supposed fit 7x 2 3/4" shells but I can only fit 6. S&J said it depends on the brand of ammo. I've tried a few different ones but no luck. Hoping to try a couple more this weekend. Anyone else experience this?

Huh i always expected the mag extension to be +1 and not +2 with 2 3/4 shell. This article is where i found my info for shotgun capacity.

Are you talking 6 in the tube and one in the chamber? If you are talking 7 in the tube on a gun chambered for 3” , the math doesn’t work.

Some folks are convinced 7 in the tube is possible, allegedly the stock config of M1014 if you load it up with 2.75" shells, but I've never seen that fit! 6 in the mag is the norm in my experience for an unrestricted m4 mag tube (with 2.75"). With just the right spring and follower, it's likely possible, but the shells need to be short as possible.

With ghost load: easy eight shells ready to shoot. Who needs more than that??

Yes I'm talking 7 in the tube. I was always under the impression it could fit this no problem. On S&J's site, it says it'll hold 7 rounds of 2 3/4".. seems like it's not possible though (without f*ng with the spring). Ehhh too bad. Appreciate the replies everyone!

I had the S&J that held 6 2-3/4" shells. I ended up finding an old Tac-star +1 extension (listed as +1, not +2) for the M4s90 and it's got a constriction for the shell follower, but it's hollow on the inside so the spring can fit through. It will hold 5 3" shells and 7 2-3/4" shells (depending on the crimp style) with a full length magazine spring.

I was actually pretty lucky to find that extension, for a brand that usually makes junk it's actually pretty nicely made. When I saw it i was checking it out wondering if i needed to limit it or not, i noticed the constriction was at the same depth as the S&J one, so i figured i'd grab it and see what it was like. I needed to buy the full length magazine spring from brownells though, as the factory 5-shot spring wasn't long enough.

If you knew what you were doing, you could probably drill the epoxy plug out and put a plastic or metal tube inside to limit the follower but let the spring go through.... Although I would be very careful about your measurements as some have stated, the shorter magazine spring may let 6 3" shells go in. As it is, i think mine can fit 5 shells and about 1/4 to 3/8 of another 3" of the 6th shell sticking out (these were the shortest unfired 3" shells I could find, just to make sure)
