Handled a non-restricted Benelli M4 recently and noticed that on the barrel it says 18.3.
Anyone else noticed this? Doesn't a semi-auto shotgun have to be 18.5in?

18.3 should be the bore diameter in mm, not barrel length.

On European shotguns, you'll often see two numbers on each barrel, one indicating the bore diameter, the other indicating the choke.

For example, on a Sauer Aya shotgun I just checked, the barrels are marked:

Choke
17.3
18.6

Choke
17.3
18.6

This indicates that both barrels have full chokes.

Ah... I see, this makes sense. Thank you.

Well I did measure it, but I wanted to make sure I have a proper explanation ready if I run into say a conservation officer or something. Because 18.5" is right on the limit, anything shorter will make it restricted and that would not look good if I just came out of the woods with it.;)

When in doubt... a tape measure is a useful tool.
