Hello all,

My recent purchase was an M4 and it came with one choke a modified.

Is this choke ok for slugs and steel shot?
What slugs would work well in this gun?
What are the differences between the chokes?
I have had a Reminton 870 pump for years without a choke and shoot practical shotgun so i never learned what the chokes are for.

You could use the Modified for slug, it won't hurt, but the recommended choke for slugs is Improved Cylinder, you'll get better accuracy. That modified is about the maximum you should use for steel shot. Unless you get a Full choke marked Lead/Steel. Larger steel shot, say #2 and up doesn't need a lot of choke to throw tight patterns. Some people use I/C for everything. A Full choke can actually blow a large steel shot pattern. Basically what I'm saying is to get an I/C and use it for slugs and steel. If you want a tighter pattern in small steel shot, like #4 or #6, then a tighter choke like a Mod will do.

My main purpose for the gun will be 7 1/2 to 8 shot and slugs.

Practical shotgun competitions.

Is the mod choke ok for this.

I'm assuming the 7 1/2 and 8 are going to be lead target loads? If so you can use the Mod for everything, however your best accuracy will be obtained using I/C or Cylinder Bore for your slugs. When you slugs swage down through a tight choke then your accuracy will suffer.

For what its worth the "Benelli guy"(aka the dealer) told me that M1 and M4 chokes were interchangeable.

I just got my M4 last week and ordered a Briley extended skeet choke for shooting slugs. Awsome stuff! I would stay away from mod. for slugs.
