So I've got a buddy who has a brand new MR1. He was all excited to take it out and try it for the first time. Shooting 55gr Hornady ammo he can't get it under 3' @ 100 yards. He is going to try it with some heavier ammo but I'm just wondering if anyone else has had experience with this rifle has any comments on it's accuracy and function.

Try Hornady 60gr TAP-FPD and Federal Gold Match 69gr

Give it a try with some of the best commercial 1-9" barrel twist ammo:
  1. Hornady 223 Rem 60gr TAP-FPD
  2. Federal Gold Macth 223 Rem 69gr BTHP

You should get 1 - 1.5" groups with one or both of these. I always carry 2 or 3 boxes of each of these cartridges so that I can test the accuracy of any .223 semi. (I also carry Federal Gold Match 308 Win 175 BTHP and PMC 150 FMJ-BT to test any interesting 308 rifle).

Posted a while ago about an MR1 I got from Clay at Prophet River. Winchester white box, sandbagged at 100M on a blustery winter day and I still got a nice 5 round group. That was the first time I shot the rifle, and it was in the 1-1/2" range.

I've actually been unimpressed with factory Hornady ammo... their 55gr super performance .223 was on par with AE 55gr bulk stuff (from my Swiss Arms), and their 30-06 super performance 180gr is less accurate than the cheap 180gr Federal blue box stuff (with my M70).

Using their 60 gr V-Max bullets in handloads on the other hand...

Ya try the 60 gr vmax handloads. I am positive you will get exceptional accuracy. They do very well in my XCR which has the same twist.

If you think you're gonna get bolt action accuracy out of a semi auto its not gonna happen. On the interweb everyones rifle shoots sub MOA but its a different story in real life.

Hey! My AR puts every bullet through the same hole... As long as I'm the first
one down range and I've got some patches handy....

He's not expecting bolt gun accuracy, but for what you pay for an MR-1 he was disappointed.

Really I thought you paid extra for an MR1 because it was un-restricted.

Or what a benelli rep might say: "It's the best home defense rifle ever made. Why are you trying to use it past 25 yards?!"

Bolt action rifles are the queens of accuracy but many semi can shoot "well".
Shooting Times got 1" to 1.5" 5 shot groups while test the MR1 so you should also get the same kind of groups, just use high quality ammo that is matched with our barrel twist (you probably won't get best results from 40gr or 75gr bullet in 1-9 twist), make sure that you clean your rifle properly (often 20 rounds will degrade accuracy) and use a good, well installed scope.

Semi auto (semi) accuracy is nothing magical, it's just tougher to get because of the moving parts.

I guess you haven't shot an accurized AR-15 or AR-10 then. They keep up with top end tactical bolt actions. That being said the AR platform is the semi auto exception to the rule.
