Clay at Prophet River advertised a Benelli MR1 in the EE last week. I called him up and we talked a little about it. He's a great guy to deal with and told me right off the bat that he didn't know a lot about them. I read everthing that I could about them in the forums here and elsewhere and i just wasn't sure. I called him back and told him I didn't think it was for me. Questionable accuracy, pencil barrel, ergonomics issues. I was down that road with the Mini-14 years ago and shot patterns instead of groups. Then I kicked it around all weekend and decided the only way to know for sure was to drive the hour and actually see/hold onto it. Needless to say, it wound up coming home with me.

A good cleaning, remove the rear sight, a set of Burris tactical rings, and a Bushnell 6-24 X 40 and I was ready to try it out.

Many of the things that I read were true. The ergonomics are different, but I found them comfortable. The thin barrel did throw the rounds around when it got warm. And it threw my brass around, some to the side and some to the rear. (this is something I'll have to look into) But I have to say that after some of the bad press this rifle has received, I was pleasantly surprised.

Let me set the scene a little. It wasn't a great day to site in a rifle. Somewhere around -23C, a crosswind at about 10 km/h, a wind-chill that made your fingers go numb(even with gloves on) and snow drifted deep enough at the shooting bench that I was somewhere between kneeling and laying in it. But I just had to try it out! All I had for ammo was some American Eagle 55 gr. FMJ, no handloads in sight. This was my best group of the day, although I had a couple more that were close. I know that I'm going to have to do a lot more work with this gun when it gets warmer, and see what it's really capable of, but like I say, so far I'm really impressed. It isn't an H&K, or a Swiss Arms. It isn't a RA XCR. But it is mine and I think that I like this little rifle - Thanks Clay

5 round group at 100 yds using AE 55gr. FMJ Sorry about the picture but it's the first time I've tried to post one.

Are you able to mount the scope low enough to have a cheek weld? I have seen some pictures that of MR1's with scopes and they look a little awkward. I like the rifle but hesitate as it does not appear to be optics friendly. What is your take on it?

The cheek weld isn't bad, it kind of reminds me of the H&K 91/93's from the old days. It's not an AR, and it's not my M-14 in the sage stock, but it's not bad. I hear a lot of talk about cheek weld, and then I look at a lot of the rifles out there with large optics mounted(some of them are really expensive rigs) and wonder if a guy can even get a chin weld on them. On many guns the only way to really get a proper cheek weld is with a riser of some type, and this may get one in the summer if I feel I need the extra inch or so.

I find a good cheekweld with my setup, but had to remove the rear site to get it. Otherwise as stated a good chin weld. I'm running a bushnell elite 4200 1.5-4X with a red dot. Seems to be a great scope for this rifle...I wasn't to sure about it at first but after mounting it and shooting I gained a rapid apreciation for it.

Do you have any pics of your setup. I am planning to scope mine and have not decided on which scope yet. I am going to get a custom rail to cover the whole reciever top rather then that short one which give eye relief issues.

I put my old Leupold 4X scope on to just look at it. I fliped the rail around this gave me 1 more inch of eye relief. The rail will set at the back but it will only allow 3 screws to be used instead of the 4. How does this look. I would like to get something more tactical.

I did some computer mock ups with a photo editor what do you think of these.

That looks great be2man. Did you try flipping the picatinny rail around the screws will line up and you will gain about 1" of eye relief. I am going to have a custom rail made that covers the whole top that way it will hide all the holes from the old sights.

Sorry guys, been away from the site for a few days. This is a picture of my set up. I like the 6-24 power when I'm working up a load for a rifle and when I want to see exactly what it will do. I will probably put something smaller on it later, but with this scope at 100 meters I can see precisely where I am aiming and my POI. Although with this it's good for gophers way out there. I haven't turned my rail around, but as has been mentioned, if a full length rail came out I would purchase one. I would also like to find one of the telescoping stocks for it, and the rail kit that I've heard about. (All the better to mount a light so I can see those coyote's that like to sneak into the corral at o'dark hundred) I haven't had a chance to do anything more with it because of work and some seriously miserable weather, but spring is finally on the way, or so I hear. Will post more when I get a chance.

As to posting pictures I just read the sticky on it in the FAQ's and then stumbled through it. Photobucket! I'm told that if you want them smaller you can crop the photo before you upload it. Giving it a try today
