Ok Guys I am looking for you input

So I got a Benelli m4 in a trade. I really like it but I found two issues that are bugging me. My only other shotgun is a 870P which runs like a top.

The first issue is, I cannot load a round into the tube while in the middle of a shooting string. What I mean by this is in the middle of a stage I can top up the magazine tube on my 870 while one round in the chamber.

On the benelli I cannot top up the tube until I am on the last round, because there will always be the next round sitting on the lifter.

My second issue us, it is extremely hard to load rounds. On my 870 I can even double load, with 2 rounds at a time, but on the benelli even getting one in at a time is a hassle.

These two flaws make me think, the benelli is not as great as a tactical shotgun as people rave about.

Maybe I am looking at this the wrong way?? What do you guys think.

Something is not right there.
You should be able to feed the tube at anytime. (Unless it is full)
It does NOT take more effort to load the tube over an 870.

The only time you should ever see a round on the lifter is on a ghost load.

So maybe your button to feed the tube onto the lifter is stuck or broken.

Could the shell retainer be failing, causing the next round to exit the tube and sit in the lifter?

Something is wrong with your M4.

It very likely could be the shell latch is damaged. It's a comparatively fairly cheap part to replace (50 bucks US at brownells; in stock)

It could also be as simple as the spring for it got misplaced, if you take the trigger group out you should be able to see the spring pushing it away. It'll be at the rear end of the lever inside the receiver.

I can easily double load shells as well as load up any time before the trigger gets pulled or the shell release gets hit.

Speaking of the shell release button, when the trigger group is out make sure the shell release 'button' wants to stay DOWN at the back (sticking out the bottom) it should move freely. There will be a little wire spring that keeps it pushed down at the back, if this part doesn't work; it won't keep the shell stop lever from stopping shells.

If either of those 2 parts is damaged or inoperable it wont want to keep shells in the mag tube, which would make loading the mag tube extremely difficult. Also, if it has a +1 extension make sure the spring is the correct length; as a spring that's too heavy will make loading difficult and it may feed shells quicker than the shell latch can handle.
