Not sure if anyone would know but I am in the midst of picking up a new shotgun and am trying to figure out what the big differences are between the M2 and SBE (Super Black Eagle) II aside from the M2 shooting 3" and the SBE II shooting up to 3.5" shells.

The other thing that has me a little confused is that the M2 comes with a nice hardshell case and the SBE II does not, any idea why Benelli would sell a more expensive gun without a case. At least that's what the sales guys at Shooters Choice in Waterloo told me that the SBE II does not come with a case to speak of.

I'm sure I can pick up a nice case afterwards...any recommendations without breaking the bank completely?

Well as far as I can tell the main difference the two is that the M2 had its beginnings as a LE shotgun, the SBE is a true sporting shotgun. The receivers are very different but the operating system remains the same. The hard case difference in IMO is a "fluke". Any decent hard case can be had. If you want to carry 2 shotguns shop around for a Pelican case on Ebay? or give Lebaron a try.

The SBE II receiver top is integral to the bbl + the trigger guard design offers a bit more space to 'better' accommodate gloved fingers....the SBE II initially came with a such take down case that you mention - strange that Benelli no longer show that as part of Standard Features for the model.

Personally, I prefer (as well own) the M2 design having traded a new SBE II a while back.......have no use for 3 1/2" shells. Frankly, if one is not obsessed with larger cartridges there is basically no difference in build quality and performance between the two.

The M2 sells for less too.....around $1450? I would recommend a soft Boyt take down case or a similar Redhead design (both available at Basspro) as that could easily be accommodated inside a large duffel bag along with bulky hunt clothes etc.....just an idea :)

Benelli

I owned a SBE and they are simply a great gun. That had the hard case and I haven't heard anything about the new Benneli's not having a case. I sold off the 3.5 SBE, like mentioned above I had no need for the 3.5 inch shells.

Currently have a M1 Super 90 in Timber camo. Great gun and cycles everything I put in it from target loads on up. The other Benelli on the rack is the Supersport and that has certainly met my hopes and expectations as a clay target gun.

As a hunting gun the Benelli, in my opinion, is a easier gun to maintain than the Beretta. As for recoil I've never shot the Xtrema but the 3.5" shells I shot in my SBE didn't bother me and the SBEII have the better pads to soak up recoil.

As I mentioned in other posts, I sold of my Berettas and Remingtons in favor of the Benelli simply because of fit, maintenance and I'm able to shoot them better.

Buy the SBE if you really need that 3.5". Suggest you take a look at the Benelli Cordoba as a do all sporting and hunting gun.

The SBEII does come with a hard case. What does "to speak of" mean? It either does or it does not!

Well according to Shooters Choice in Waterloo the SBE II does not come with the hardshell case and the Benelli website confirms this

Click on Standard Features then compare to the M2

I work for a Stoeger dealer and have sold at least a dozen SBE this year alone and even one to my wife's cousin. We shoot together on a regular basis and I am quite familiar with the gun I sold him. The site you provided seems to be USA. I would suggest that you call any big retail store's mail order department, other than the one you are dealing with and ask them what comes with the gun.

Thanks for the info, I'll do that and see what they have to say

Its not much of a case, but its hard and plastic. BTW if you buy the SBEII which is an excellent choice, do not store the gun in the case after using without cleaning and a film of rust prevention. My wife's cousin found out the hard way. He put it in the case and left if for a week and it came out rust red:mad:

Again. SBE2 excellent choice

I bought the SBEII today!!! Now I just have to find a place to go out and put some rounds through it before opening day, looking for a trap/skeet range around Kitchener that won't cost a fortune.

I think Galt has a club

Oh and it did come with a case as described above...not much of one but it is a case.
