Benelli R1 extra piece after reassembly help?

Hi....any experts on this firearm? My buddy took his apart and when it was reassembled there was a leftover piece as pictured. His is an older model wih wooden forend which I thought the piece might be there to tighten it or something. Any help b4 moose hunting on tuesday? lol TYIA

Got .338 WM R1 disassembled/re-assembled mine many times not recognizing what that piece could be? See if I can dig out my owner's manual for an exploded view...

I just found it on the benelli FAQ. That part is from the gas cylinder below the barrel. ty tho!

The mods don't seem to remove threads... so it's probably here forever.
