Hello All,

I recently bought a Benelli R1 (300 WM) and now obviously I need a scope on this.
I would like to hear your general recommendations in terms of scope and ring for the R1 (semi rifle). I would also be happy to hear from R1 owners about their own experience with the type of scope setup they have and what to avoid … e.g. if I have to worry about the rifle accuracy after disassembling the rifle for cleaning …

If I am not mistaken the hunting range with this rifle is within 350 yards

Thanks in advance!

M

If you have been reading this site for long, then you would know that semi auto's are no good for hunting and have terrible accuracy. You will probably be very disappointed. However I think you should buy a nice light low power variable Leupold, and before even firing a single round, you should sell it to me immediately. If you shoot it you will be so disappointed and it will loose value. Avoid this at all costs and sell it to me immediately ! Hope this helps.

My benelli is in 300WSM, and I have used two scopes on it now. My first was a bushnell elite 3200, worked great no issues. The one I have now is a leupold VXII, reason being, I just sold my .338 so I thought expensive gun, expensive scope. But again no issues. As for dissasembly of the gun nothing to worry about in regards to the scope, unless you are removing the scope from the gun, then there will be issues.

I have 2 R1's in 3006 and have been hunting with them for a few years now.

I went with Leupold PRW low rings on both and Leupold VX3 3.5-10 on one, and VX3 4.5-14AO on the other, both 40mm scopes.

Mine both shoot very similar, which is load four in the mag, rack the bolt and first shot hits left of bull's eye, second shot hits right, third hits left, fourth hits right. They alternate an inch left or right depending on how many are in the mag. I thought this was bad having grown up shooting 700bdl's, but I can hit the 400m turkey at the range consistently so I think its accurate enough for hunting big game. I have tried pretty much every type of 150 grain ammo available and have even reloaded to get the same results. If you keep the same number of bullets in the mag, they will shoot moa groups.

Cleaning doesn't seem to change the POI, and I even took a scope off (keeping the rings attatched to the scope) and then put it back on and the POI was the same. I wouldn't do that before going hunting though, I was just trying a different scope. I always tighten scopes with a torque wrench too, so that might've helped.

Anyways, congrats on the R1, I'm sure you'll be happy hunting with it! I know I'm spoiled now and only hunt with semi autos. All we need now is a company to make 5 shot mags for them, especially the magnums.

With respect to the maximum range of your rifle, the .300 Winchester cartridge is certainly capable of hitting targets at ranges beyond 350 yards, but the limitations of the rifle lie with the ammunition chosen, and the ability of the shooter.
