Benelli R1 questions

Hey everyone

I have a Benelli R1 walnut stock in .30-06 I bought it to be a Moose rifle and was going to buy a .270 for a deer rifle because I dont like exit wounds and most of my shots are under 300yds for deer.

Now should I get a Remington SPS700 Buckmasters .270win or equivenent or should just spend the extra like $150 and get the Benelli R1 .270WSM conversion barrel for my R1?.

Will the WSM pack to much power and make it point less to go smaller?

I'd stick with what you got, and try different bullets/velocities. I think the .270 would exit the same as the '06 with similar bullets.

BTW, its seems backward to have a semi for moose and a bolt for deer?
 
ya I see where your coming from I kinda want an excuse to buy another gun....lol....

and yes semi for moose and bolt for deer doesnt make sence. I wish Benelli would make smaller calibers for the R1 like a .243, .25-06 or .270win.
 
actually I would love to buy a .223 barrel for varmints a .243/.25-06 for Deer and my .30-06 for Bear,Moose....ect

I think if Benelli got into smaller caliber semi's they would sell more guns cause there isnt much choice for non-restricted semi .223's to choose from and the benelli would be the most accurate of whats available thats for sure.
 
Any particular reason you do not like exist wounds?
I'll take a relatively clean exit over a bullet that fragments and destroys more meat any day of the week.
 
Changing calibre isn't going to change bullet penetration. Try going to a bullet design that expands more rapidly but with that said, you will never find a suitable big game bullet in either .270 or .30-06 that will penetrate the same distance from 0-300 yards...it's not possible. Each bullet has its optimum performance range and at ranges outside of it, performance won't be optimum. That doesn't mean a won't be equally deadly just not performing optimally. I can easily blow right through a deer at 300 yards with a .25-06 with the right bullet and I can leave a bullet in an animal at 300 yards with a .300 mag with the right bullet. In the calibre range you've outlined, it's got virtually nothing to do with bore diameter and everything to do with bullet construction.
 
I want the animal to absorb all the energy from the bullet i.e. rapid expansion causing huge internal damage is the goal.

Thanks for the info guys I will look into some other bullets. I'm using sierra 165gr gamekings right now.

It's a deer you're hunting not a gopher or a groundhog. :rolleyes:

You're far better off having two holes leaking blood than one, esp with a big fat exit wound ........ and furthermore that "huge internal damage" is also known as bloodshot meat, which is not edible.

A good fragible varmint bullet will give you your desired results, but be prepared to lose alot of injured game.

The 270 will penetrate just as deep as a 30-06. Absorbing all the energy means nothing. An exit wound means a longer wound channel and bleeding out of two holes. Other than using a varmint round, most bullets will pass through a deer and varmint rounds will lose deer.
 
You will wish you had an exit wound after your deer runs away. I like the exit wound provided by an expanding bullet. I have been refraining from hunting with some of the calibers I have. I know they will kill, but they don't help me find it.

Skip the .270 barrel and get the 300 win mag, and aim for the neck. :D
And yes I have an R1 in 300 win mag.

BTW where are you buying the Benelli barrel kits from?
