Benelli R1 Rifle - Any Comments or Experience? Or Just Go Bolt Action?

I grew up shooting remington 700's. They're great.

When first tried out a semi, there was not going back. No recoil, always ready to go.

Tried every semi I could get my hands on in 30-06. (H&K 940, Rem 4 740 7400, Bar Safari, Bar Longtrac, WIn SXR, Garand). There's a few more new ones on the market now (verney carron, merkel, ?) but I still haven't seen one live.

All I hunt with now is and R1. I put around 500 rounds per year though it, and have for the last 6 years or so.

I have a wood and synthetic. The plastic fore-end always needs to be tightened. But the comfortech does soak up some recoil. The wood one doesn't see much action, I always use the plastic one.

The longtrac with the sxr mag is a nice set-up too.

Brother Drillbit, I thank you for the reply.

Yeah, I want to get into hunting... ans friends have said there is no one correct answer. I am a big, strong man, but the kick of bolt action rifles is something I respect... Any accuracy gained from a bolt would be paid for in my shoulder.

Oh, I am a trap shooting amateur fanatic.... but high powered rifles are to be respected. Wolverine Supplies should be able to get me the R1.

I had a Benelli R1 Argo in 300 Win Mag for over a year and only had to sell it for lack of funds at the time.
During that year I found it to be one of the easiest semis to operate, keep clean and mine functioned flawlessly.

IMHO the Italians designed a brilliant system and is well worth the money.

In spite of my obsession with single shots I'd buy another Argo if I ever got the chance and the funds again.

I have one in 300 Win and I love it,

They are very well designed and thought out. The balance is awesome and mine shoots quite accurately. The thin barrels on them will not take much to warm up though, but its a hunting gun so not a significant issue. They are a lot of fun, you'll enjoy it!

Just don't go gonzo and over tighten the nut holding the forearm to the gas system...hand tight is more then enough.

Damn now I want one again lol.

I have sighted in a number of R1s, and all shot very good if I remember correctly....What I am sure of is they all cycled perfectly.....

Hey,

Al's had the deluxe (ie. fancy fancy $2200 r1 Benelli you can find on the Benelli international web site)... But my second choice was always the Browning X-Bolt white gold stainless.

I appreciated the refer to Al's, as they carry the Browning gun.

Al's stocks it, so I ordered the 30-06 white gold browning x bolt and the Leopold VX 3 L 4.5 - 14 x 50 B&C scope with it, for a total price not too much more than just the deluxe Benelli r1 semi auto.

Truth be known, my love is trap shooting... and one day my Browning BT-99 Golden Clays will arrive courtesy Wolverine Supplies. In the final analysis, it made no sense for me to tie up what would have been almost $4K in a hunting rifle. Also, I have a couple of friends who will help me with handloads for the 30-06... something that can be repeated and dialed in much more than any semi auto gun, & semi auto's are hard on brass, stretching it, etc...

So, uh, Al Flaherty's still won... though they have a gorgeous deluxe Benelli R1 in .300 Win Mag still sitting on their shelf. See the link:
