I hunted with 2 of them, I first bought a 300 Win Mag with wooden stock (used for moose) and later bought a 30-06 with Comfortech (for deer).
I found the wood stock to be too nice to abuse and did not want to use it for hunting anymore so for years I kept changing the calibers on the Comfortech. It is extremely easy and fast to swap caliber (when you are lucky enough to have a choice of calibers).
This is NOT a high precision long range gun. The accuracy on both R1 guns is what you could expect from a good quality semi rifle, it is on par with the Browning BAR Safari (300 Win Mag) and the Browning BAR Short Track (270WSM).
Disassembling the gun for cleaning, inspection or repairs is a breeze, the BAR does not even come close.
Workmanship quality seems to me comparable to Browning but I am not a gunsmith.
I prefer the R1 magazine system because it a “straight” mag insert. With the Browning, you have to first clip the magazine to the floor plate and once secure, close the floor plate.
In my opinion, you are not going wrong with the R1. Back when I was first shopping for a 300 Win Mag, I had to decide the best gun for me. Yes, everyone was telling me to buy the BAR. I went against everyone’s advice and got the R1… With hindsight and knowing what I know about those guns today, I would still buy the R1 if I had to buy a 300 Win Mag again.
Happy Shopping
